MT 403 and 503-CLINICAL CHEMISTRY
Didactic–lecture instruction includes the principles of all tests performed in clinical chemistry, the pathophysiology involved in interpretation of test results, quality control, statistics, their evaluation and laboratory mathematics. Topics include liver function, carbohydrates, lipids and apolipoproteins, proteins, enzymes, acid-base balance, therapeutic drug monitoring, toxicology, endocrinology, vitamins and analysis of all body fluids.
Four credit hours.

Practicum–laboratory instruction is given on all current clinical chemistry methods utilizing instrumentation along with interpretation of laboratory results. Physical, chemical, and microscopic analyses of the urine are included as well as special testing procedures, quality control and computer operation.
Six credit hours.

MT 400 and 500-CLINICAL HEMATOLOGY (Includes Hemostasis)
Didactic–lecture instruction covers concepts of blood cell development, abnormal blood cell morphology in all types of hematologic disease, and the principles, quality control, and sources of error of all routine and specialized hematology tests/procedures. The principles and sources of error of current hematology instruments are included. Normal blood coagulation mechanisms of the body, the pathophysiology of hemorrhagic and thrombotic diseases, and the principles, techniques, and sources of error of tests performed in coagulation are also a part of this course.
Four credit hours.

Practicum–laboratory instruction on blood cell identification and differential counting in blood and body fluids, automated cell counting methods, and all other hematologic methods to include specialized tests. Laboratory instruction on the performance and quality control of routine and specialized tests in coagulation. Emphasis is placed on the correlation of test results with disease states. In addition, laboratory instruction on immunology/serology testing is included.

MT 402 and 502-IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY (Blood Bank)
Didactic–lecture instruction covers principles of blood banking including all the major blood group systems, antibody characteristics and problems, use of blood components, donor screening, transfusion reactions, and prenatal testing.
Two credit hours.

Practicum–laboratory instruction on blood typing and crossmatching procedures, antibody identification, blood component preparation, blood donor requirements and draws, quality control procedures and problem-solving in blood bank.
Four credit hours.

MT 405 and 505-MICROBIOLOGY
Didactic–lecture includes bacteriology, parasitology, virology and mycology. Instruction includes principles of identification of pathogenic organisms and principles of microbial pathophysiology, including colony morphology, biochemical characteristics and staining characteristics. Also included is the theory of antibiotic treatment and testing, media characteristics, sterilization methods, and bacterial, parasitic, virus, and fungus growth requirements.
Four credit hours.

Practicum–laboratory instruction on bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal and parasitic isolation, identification and susceptibility testing including plate reading, biochemical inoculation and reading, gram and acid-fast staining, and media preparation Instumentation and quality control in microbiology are also emphasized.

MT 412 and 506-COMPUTER SCIENCE AND LABORATORY SKILLS
Didactic–lecture includes the principles of computer science, phlebotomy, specimen handling procedures, professionalism, customer relations, instumentation and problem solving.
One credit hour.

Practicum–laboratory instruction on computer systems, proper techniques in collection, handling and processing specimens, instrument maintenance and practice in problem solving skills.
One credit hour.

MT 410-ORIENTATION (Safety and Quality Assurance)
Didactic–lecture includes a review of statistics and quality assurance in the clinical laboratory. Safety in the hospital and laboratory is also included.
One credit hour.

MT 401-CLINICAL IMMUNOLOGY
Didactic–lecture instruction on principles of immunology, emphasizing the clinical aspects of immunology such as hypersensitivity, autoimmune disease, and immune deficiency states. Principles and sources of error of all types of clinical serologic tests/procedures are also covered.

MT 404-URINALYSIS
Didactic–lecture instruction on the structure and function of the kidney, renal pathology and the principles, sources of error and interpretation of test results in urinalysis.
One credit hour.

MT 408-CLINICAL LABORATORY SUPERVISION AND MANAGEMENT
Didactic–lecture instruction on management styles, motivation of employees, management skills and current legal issues influencing laboratory operations and management. This course is covered during a three-day seminar with guest lecturers who are leaders in laboratory profession.
One credit hour.

MT 409-EDUCATION
Didactic–lecture instruction on writing behavioral objectives, teaching methods, forms of evaluation, and motivation of students. This is a self-instructional unit where the student prepares a lecture utilizing the skills learned.
