After careful consideration Rockingham Memorial Hospital has decided to put the nurse extern program on hold for 2010, since we will be moving to our new hospital. The spring and summer of 2010 will be a very busy time of transition and moving, and we do not want that to interfere with the extern's learning experience. We hope to resume the extern program in 2011. Thank you for your understanding!

Through the RMH Summer Extern Program, you can get paid while gaining valuable experience!

This exciting summer learning experience offers a flexible schedule, allowing students to work four weeks at a minimum and 10 weeks at a maximum. The program begins at the end of May and continues through the first week of August. It is open to nursing students who have completed one year of clinical experience and have the ability to perform approved procedures.

As an extern, you will work with an RN “buddy.” You will have the opportunity to:
	Observe and assist the staff RN with assessing needs and planning care for patients;
	Provide activities of daily living;
	Take vital signs;
	Obtain specimens; and
	Perform complex procedures with RN supervision.
You will not be performing the following functions:
	Giving medication
	Accepting verbal orders
	Transcribing written orders
	Administering blood
	Starting, regulating or discontinuing IVs
	Counting controlled drugs
	Supervising other employees
	Changing subclavian and CAPD dressings
	Documenting in the medical record
